Zach's research focuses on developing robotic systems powered by electrostatic artificial muscles, recently earning him a publication in Science Robotics. In addition to his research, he helped to establish an IMPRS-IS scholar mentor/mentee Buddy Program.
We are excited to feature Zachary Yoder as our next IMPRS-IS Scholar Spotlight!
Zach joined IMPRS-IS in 2021, working under the supervision of Christoph Keplinger in the Robotic Materials Department of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. His research focuses on developing the next generation of robotic systems powered by electrostatic artificial muscles. Zach's most recent achievement includes the development of high-speed, honeycomb-like robotic modules, which snap together to create reconfigurable robots. This work was recently published in Science Robotics, marking a significant contribution to the field.
In addition to his research, Zach served as an IMPRS-IS student representative from 2023 to 2024, representing the MPI-IS Stuttgart site. His role in this capacity allowed him to advocate for his fellow doctoral researchers and contribute to strengthening the IMPRS-IS community by helping to create a new scholar mentor/mentee Buddy Program.
Prior to joining IMPRS-IS, Zach studied mechanical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Colorado, in the United States. Beyond his academic and professional endeavors, Zach enjoys staying active through trail running and weightlifting, and he loves to explore new places around the world. Some of his favorite travel destinations include the Lofoten Peninsula in Norway, Sevilla in Spain, and São Miguel Island in the Azores. He is always happy to share his travel recommendations with others!
Looking ahead, Zach is actively seeking design and test engineering roles in industry, with a focus on the San Francisco Bay area, where he hopes to continue advancing the field of robotics.
We are really proud to feature Zach as a scholar spotlight and wish him luck with the final stages of his doctorate and beyond!
